A Lacquer Stationary Box

An export lacquer stationary box decorated in gold hira-maki-e with figures picnicking in a garden and with shrines beneath trees, with green velvet and leather interior with compartments for letters, applied with a silver lock and handles.

Edo period, circa 1750   

The pair to this box, but made for knives, is in the Groninger Museum (Inv.1989-347) illustrated Japanese Export Lacquer 1580-1850 by Oliver Impey and Christiaan Jorg no.46 & no.400.
