Malcolm Fairley is an internationally respected dealer specialising in Japanese art, with a particular focus on works from the Meiji period (1868–1912). With over four decades of experience, Malcolm’s expertise, integrity and deep commitment to the preservation of Japan’s artistic heritage have earned him a prominent position within the global art community. 

A Career Rooted in Authenticity and Expertise 

Beginning his career at Sotheby’s in the 1970s, Malcolm quickly developed a deep appreciation for Japanese art and its craftsmanship. His passion led him to partner with leading galleries before founding his own, one that would later become recognised as a destination for collectors of fine Japanese antiques and Meiji period art. 

He then headed the Japanese department of Sotheby's Belgravia in 1979, concentrating on art of the Meiji period 1868-1912.  He then joined Barry Davies Oriental Art, where, along with the late Dr Oliver Impey of the Ashmolean Museum, he edited the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Japanese Art -Meiji no Takara: Treasures of Imperial Japan.  

As a Japanese art expert, Malcolm’s knowledge extends across a wide range of materials and techniques, including cloisonné enamel, lacquerware, metalwork, ceramics and Japanese textiles. Each piece he selects reflects an eye for exceptional quality and historical importance.
