An inlaid silver box and cover worked in shakudo, shibuichi, silver and gold with a bird in flight above wild flowers and grasses, including hibiscus, bell flowers and yarrow, the interior with a wood liner.

Sekiguchi Shinya was born in Shiba-ku, Tokyo, the son of celebrated metalwork artist Sekiguchi Ichiya (1850-1933), who trained under Goto Ichijo(1791-1876). 

At age 14 he became the student of master metalwork artist Hashimoto Isshi (1820-1896) and studied painting under Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908). 


He exhibited extensively at both domestic and international exhibitions including the  fourth Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai (National Industrial Exposition), Kyoto in 1895,  the 1900 Paris Exhibition, the fifth Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai, Osaka in 1903, and the Tokyo Taisho exhibition of 1914.
