Kato Zenji III (1848-1918)- Porcelain panel with ayu
A porcelain panel, finely painted with a shoal of ayu , naturalistically rendered with pale yellow gills, within an inner border of ruyi heads and an outer border of stylised paulownia.
Signed with two red artist seals and impressed kanji seal for Kato Zenji to reverse, with old US Customs paper label.

Meiji period, circa 1895
The seal is of Kato Zenji III of Seto, who was commissioned to make decorated plaques for the Imura Hikojiro workshop of Yokohama, and was renowned for his enamelling prowess.
A remarkably similar panel by Yasukiyo Tomoda was exhibited at the Spring Exhibition (1894) of The Japan Art Association illustrated in the Magazine of Japanese Art, vol.1 , no.1.
