Ozeki company
Metalwork
A fine shibuichi vase, the flared body decorated with waves around the base and a formal floral border to the top in translucent enamel, entwined by a silver dragon clutching a rock crystal sphere.
Unsigned.
Height 28.6cm.
Circa 1890.
Meiji period.
Although unsigned this vase bears strong similarities to the work of Yamada Motonobu (1847-97) for the Ozeki Company, the dragon being unquestionably by the same hand as the pair supporting the table screen in the Nasser D Khalili Collection, illustrated in Meiji no Takara, The Nasser D Khalili Collection, Metalwork part I, no.55. The formal borders with the use of different coloured golds and enamel are also typical of the Ozeki Company.
