Lacquer document box


A lacquer document box (ryoshibako)  worked in gold and coloured taka-maki-e with emblems of the four classes of Edo society, the samurai and warriors, farmers, craftsmen and merchants, including a bow on a stand, a basket of leaves, calligraphy implements, and a set of scales and abacus. The black ground of a simulated woven effect (shibonuri), the interior of mura-nashiji.
Length 45.0 cm, width 35.0cm, height 18.5cm.
Circa 1870.
